Breast Augmentation Surgery

What You Need to Know

Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement or a boob job, is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures worldwide. This surgery is designed to increase the size, shape, and fullness of the breasts using implants or fat transfer. Many women choose breast augmentation to enhance their appearance, boost confidence, or restore breast volume lost due to weight loss, pregnancy, or aging.

Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Ideal candidates for breast augmentation surgery are women who are in good health, have fully developed breasts, and are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts. This surgery may be right for you if:

  • You feel your breasts are too small or uneven.
  • Your breasts have lost volume or shape due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss.
  • You want to improve your body proportions and balance.
  • You have realistic expectations and understand the risks and benefits of the procedure.

Types of Breast Implants

There are two main types of breast implants used in augmentation surgery:

  • Saline Implants: These implants are filled with sterile saltwater. They are inserted into the breast empty and then filled to the desired size, allowing for minor adjustments in size. If the implant leaks, the body naturally absorbs the saline without harm.
  • Silicone Implants: Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel, which feels more like natural breast tissue. Many women prefer the feel of silicone implants, but regular check-ups are recommended to ensure the implants remain intact.

The choice between saline and silicone implants depends on your personal preferences, body type, and the surgeon’s recommendations.

Breast Augmentation Procedure and Recovery

Breast augmentation surgery typically takes 1 to 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon makes incisions in inconspicuous areas, such as under the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit, to minimize visible scarring. The implants are then placed either under the chest muscle (submuscular) or over the chest muscle (subglandular), depending on the desired look and the patient’s anatomy.
